Acne is the most common skin condition in America. It impacts between 40-50 million Americans at any one time. However, it is certainly not the only skin issue that people suffer from that CBD may help. A variety of studies are emerging regarding CBD and acne, psoriasis, eczema, shingles, sunburn, itching, and more. So what research is there involving CBD and skin as a whole?

This study from the National Institutes of Health, or NIH, gives us a look at what impact CBD might have on those struggling with acne. Interestingly, the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is rampant in the skin. Endocannabinoids such as anandamide, and both endocannabinoid receptors, CB1 and CB2, are present in the skin. The study says,

“Although the best studied functions over the ECS are related to the central nervous system and to immune processes, experimental efforts over the last two decades have unambiguously confirmed that cutaneous cannabinoid signaling is deeply involved in the maintenance of skin homeostasis, barrier formation and regeneration, and its dysregulation was implicated to contribute to several highly prevalent diseases and disorders, e.g., atopic dermatitis, psoriasis, scleroderma, acne, hair growth and pigmentation disorders, keratin diseases, various tumors, and itch.”

It’s important to remember that these statements are coming from the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and public health research. However, it doesn’t end there. It continues on with some impressive statements regarding CBD.

“As discussed above, research efforts of the past two decades have undoubtedly proven that cannabinoid signaling profoundly influences several aspects of the cutaneous biology, and its dysregulation is likely to contribute to the pathogenesis of several skin diseases….Systematic basic research efforts as well as clinical trials are therefore invited to exploit the untapped potential of the cannabinoid system in managing skin diseases, in order to pave new “high”-ways towards developing novel therapeutic tools.”

Another study from the NIH concludes that the ECS is built to “control the proper and well-balanced proliferation, differentiation and survival, as well as immune competence and/or tolerance, of skin cells.” It does note that more research is needed, but that is true with almost anything CBD related.

The skin is our largest organ, so it’s important to take good care of it, just as we would any other organ in our body. Whether it be sunburns, acne, psoriasis, eczema, shingles, or a variety of other skin-related conditions, CBD may be helpful.
