The Entourage Effect is becoming more and more of a researched and intriguing concept. It’s basically the enhanced impact that multiple cannabinoids and/or terpenes have when working together. Let’s take a look at one of the main ways that Alpha-Pinene (a prominent terpene) and CBD work together.

This study, by the National Institutes of Health, explains how Alpha-Pinene exhibits anti-inflammatory activity. It says:

We investigated the inhibitory effects of α-Pinene on inflammatory responses induced by lipopolysaccharide (LPS) using mouse peritoneal macrophages. α-Pinene significantly decreased the LPS-induced production of interleukin-6 (IL-6), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), and nitric oxide (NO). α-Pinene also inhibited inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) expressions in LPS-stimulated macrophages. Additionally, the activations of MAPKs and NF-κB were attenuated by means of α-pinene treatment. These results indicate that α-pinene has an anti-inflammatory effect and that it is a potential candidate as a new drug to treat various inflammatory diseases.

CBD, like Alpha-Pinene, also exhibits strong anti-inflammatory activity. There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of studies showing CBD’s anti-inflammatory effect, but this specific study focuses on the topical and transdermal aspect of it.

Phytocannabinoids modulate inflammatory responses by regulating the production of cytokines in several experimental models of inflammation. Cannabinoid type-2 (CB2) receptor activation was shown to reduce the production of the monocyte chemotactic protein-2 (MCP-2) chemokine in polyinosinic-polycytidylic acid [poly-(I:C)]-stimulated human keratinocyte (HaCaT) cells, an in vitro model of allergic contact dermatitis (ACD).

It concludes later that, “this is the first demonstration of the anti-inflammatory properties of CBD in an experimental model of ACD”.

These studies again show the power of using a full-spectrum product, as opposed to an isolated product of CBD. Our suggestion is to take the time to research a product, find out where it’s grown, what the other ingredients are, find out its purity, if it is independently verified and tested, and also whether it is full-spectrum.
