A significant portion of people using CBD are using it for sleep. We’ve all been there - tossing and turning because you can’t slow your mind down enough to finally fall asleep. Then, we wake up the next morning and feel exhausted before we’ve even showered, had our morning coffee, or even peeled ourselves off our pillow. According to the National Institutes of Health, NIH, around 33% of adults surveyed had some form of insomnia. Percentages varied with age, profession, medical comorbidities, and even gender.
CBD has become one of the steady talking points when insomnia is brought up. A lot of main stream media is even starting to discuss it periodically. This video from CBS News is a prime example of main stream media seeking out health professionals for their opinion on using CBD for sleep.
So, does CBD actually work? One of That’s Natural’s customers struggled with seizures. It dramatically improved his quality of life from seizures, but he found sleep to be mentioned along with the decreased seizure activity. He said,“It also appears that the frequency and intensity of seizures that do occur periodically have significantly decreased, as well as more/better sleep and am able to fall asleep more quickly and wake up feeling more rested than before.” For his full testimony, see our testimonial page!
Furthermore, research continues to support the idea that cannabinoids are helpful for sleep. This study from the NIH says, “Many of the reviewed studies suggested that cannabinoids could improve sleep quality, decrease sleep disturbances, and decrease sleep onset latency. While many of the studies did show a positive effect on sleep, there are many limiting factors such as small sample sizes, examining sleep as a secondary outcome in the context of another illness, and relatively few studies using validated subjective or objective measurements.”
It's important to remember that everyone’s body is different. Certain treatments, medicines, or supplements may work for one person, and not another. How your body metabolizes a substance may be different than how your neighbors body metabolizes the same substance. The good thing is there are very few known side effects of CBD. Harvard University only mentions a few that may or may not actually occur. “Side effects of CBD include nausea, fatigue and irritability. CBD can increase the level in your blood of the blood thinner coumadin, and it can raise levels of certain other medications in your blood by the exact same mechanism that grapefruit juice does.”
So, the good news is, regardless how well CBD works for insomnia, or other sleep related disorders, there are not a large host of possible complications or side effects as there are with many of the pharmaceutical sleep aids.
