This study from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) measured whether CBD would help a woman’s arousal levels. This study set out to find if endogenous cannabinoids (arachidonoylethanolamide [AEA] and 2-arachidonoylglycerol [2-AG]) and sexual functioning had a relationship worth believing. AEA and 2-AG concentrations were measured before and immediately following viewing of neutral and erotic film stimuli. The neutral films acted as the control, while the erotic films were the experimental group. Additionally, physiological sexual arousal was measured via vaginal photoplethysmography. Arousal levels were measured both continuously and non-continuously. The results found a “significant relationship between endocannabinoid concentrations and female sexual arousal, whereby increases in both physiological and subjective indices of sexual arousal were significantly associated with decreases in AEA, and increases in subjective indices of sexual arousal were significantly associated with decreases in 2-AG.” In conclusion, the study supported the hypothesis that the endocannabinoid system is involved in female sexual functioning.
This article from Healthline examined many different aspects of using CBD for sex. It starts off with the reasoning that CBD will help people relax during sex, which makes sense considering the hundreds of studies involving CBD and anxiety. The article stresses that because of this research, CBD can be effective for sex because relaxation can reduce distractions and worries that often hinder a positive sexual experience. Alex Capano, faculty member at the Lambert Center for the Study of Medicinal Cannabis and Hemp at Thomas Jefferson University explains that CBD help to enhance a neurotransmitter called anandamide. “Anandamide is our bliss neurotransmitter, and it’s also associated with oxytocin [also known as the ‘cuddle hormone’]. CBD helps increase the natural neurotransmitters and endorphins that we make on our own that ultimately lead to a better sexual experience.”
Capano also explains that “There are so many cannabinoid receptors in reproductive organs and sexual tissue. CBD increases blood flow to tissues, which increases sensitivity and promotes the body’s own natural lubrications”. Obviously, this could also help men with varying degrees of ED.
Additionally, another article has Jamie Alan, PhD, and assistant professor of pharmacology and toxicology at Michigan State University says, “People report a better sexual experience, increased relaxation, a more intense orgasm, and even report sleeping better after sex. Of course, some people report that they don’t feel any different.” The research at this point is largely anecdotal, and everyone’s body is different. Lauren Streicher, MD, and professor of clinical obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine says, that CBD is a vasodilator, meaning it helps open your blood vessels up. “If someone had an increased vascular supply from a vasodilator like CBD, it would theoretically increase lubrication.”
More research is needed in this area regarding CBD, but the evidence that CBD may help sexual arousal, stimulation, satisfaction, and functioning is promising.
