Some of the more popular reasons people seem to use CBD is for sleep, anxiety, and pain. In this mini-series, we will discuss each of these topics, in regard to how terpenes work alongside CBD to help in each area. The combination of these terpenes and cannabinoids is what’s known as the Entourage Effect. In short, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) explains, “In 1998, Professors Raphael Mechoulam and Shimon Ben-Shabat posited that the endocannabinoid system demonstrated an “entourage effect” in which a variety of “inactive” metabolites and closely related molecules markedly increased the activity of the primary endogenous cannabinoids, anandamide and 2-arachidonoylglycerol.”
In regards to anxiety, there are several terpenes that may help with this. These include: Alpha-Pinene (α-pinene), D-Limonene, and Beta-Caryophyllene (β-Caryophyllene).
“In this study, we investigated the effects on behavior and the accumulation in the brain and liver of α-pinene, an essential oil component, when inhaled by mice. Animals were individually housed in cages for 1 week. Mice inhaled α-pinene or water vapor (negative control) for 90 min/day for 1 day, 3 days, or 5 days, and they were then submitted to the elevated plus maze test for 10 min. We used gas chromatography with flame ionization detection to quantify concentrations of α-pinene in the brain and liver. There was significant anxiolytic-like activity, which remained constant for the 5 days’ inhalation of α-pinene. On the other hand, the accumulation of α-pinene in the brain and liver peaked on the third day of inhalation. The existence of stress related to the new environment appears to have affected the change in the accumulation of α-pinene in the internal organs, keeping the anxiolytic-like action constant.”
D-Limonene also exhibits strong anxiolytic affects, as evidence by this study from the NIH.
“These studies show that d-limonene exerts, through its metabolite POH, a significant anti-stress action measurable by behavioral and physiologic parameters under the influence of the nervous system. In addition to its anti-inflammatory effects, a beneficial role as an anti-stress substance could thus be claimed for d-limonene used as a dietary supplement.”
Finally, Beta-Caryophyllene is another terpene that exhibits anxiolytic affects, according to research. “Taken together, these preclinical results suggest that CB2 receptors may provide alternative therapeutic targets for the treatment of anxiety and depression. The possibility that BCP may ameliorate the symptoms of these mood disorders offers exciting prospects for future studies.”
As mentioned earlier, CBD is commonly used by people suffering from anxiety. Our recommendation for finding a quality CBD company is to find one with lab tests from a third party, with a product that is grown in the United States (or Colorado), and that is full-spectrum so that you receive the full benefit of the plant, and not just a very small portion of its potential.
