Frequent nightmares are something that haunts a lot of people. Generally speaking, a large portion of these people are also suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). This includes victims of war, domestic violence, abuse, rape, or attempted murder. Not only do nightmares cause people to not sleep well, but it also makes it hard for people to go to sleep. So, can CBD really help those suffering from nightmares?
That National Institutes of Health (NIH) reports on a study focused on CBD and PTSD, but it also chimes in about nightmares caused from PTSD. It says, “Administration of oral CBD in addition to routine psychiatric care was associated with PTSD symptom reduction in adults with PTSD. CBD also appeared to offer relief in a subset of patients who reported frequent nightmares as a symptom of their PTSD."
In addition, this study says:
“In addition to the possibility of CBD affecting different processes involved in aversive memory, animal studies also show favorable effects of this compound in the control of other frequent manifestations of PTSD symptomatology, such as sleep disorders. Studies in rats indicate that CBD may contribute to an increase in sleep duration and depth, and a decrease in anxiety responses induced by sleep disturbance.”
It continues on to say, “CBD oil (given at a dose of 12–25 mg once a day) appeared to relieve key symptoms, such as anxiety and sleep disturbance, while inducing minimal side effects.” Meanwhile, another case series concluded, “that CBD is able to control the symptoms of RBD” (REM sleep behavior disorder).
Finally, as this study from 2018 shows, the results of were pretty astounding, despite mild adverse effects.
“The results indicate significant improvement in global symptom severity per the Clinical Global Impression Scale in severity (P < .02) and improvement (P < .03), sleep quality per the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (P < .05), and the Nightmare Effects Survey (P < .002), frequency of nightmares per the Nightmare Frequency Questionnaire (P < .04), as well as hyperarousal per the CAPS (P < .02). Two patients reported complete remission of their nightmares. Mild adverse drug reactions were reported in 4 cases, which include dry mouth, headache, and dizziness.”
It did also state that, “Cannabinoids have a broad spectrum of action that includes hypnotic, antipsychotic, dream recall suppression, and anxiolytics properties.”
It is important to note that a quality CBD product is strongly encouraged.
