CBD has been increasingly growing in sports arenas all around the world. From NFL stars like Steve Smith and Rob Gronkowski, to NBA star Kenyon Martin, or Olympic hurdler Lolo Jones, and even golfer Bubba Watson, they are all supporters of CBD. Recently, it was announced that Major League Baseball will be removing cannabis (including marijuana and CBD products) from it’s “drugs of abuse” list. Additionally, the US Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) and the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has now allowed CBD products to be used. Maybe most importantly, the FDA is even warming up to the idea of CBD products.
According to this article from The Washington Post, the FDA recently released a statement that said it “recognizes the significant public interest in cannabis and cannabis-derived compounds, particularly CBD. However, there are many unanswered questions about the science, safety, and quality of products containing CBD.”
The article continues to examine a few select athletes and their stories about how CBD has helped them. Floyd Landis won the Tour de France in 2006, but then was disqualified for using performance-enhancing drugs. Following his hip surgery, he developed an addiction to opioids. He says this about CBD, “It’s not something I was exposed to as an athlete, but it was effective in allowing me to wean off opioids. Now I use CBD daily as a pain reliever.”
Joanna Zeiger competed in the 2000 Sydney Olympic Games as a triathlete, and multiple Ironman and 70.3 World Championships. She had a bike crash while defending her title during the 2009 Ironman 70.3 World Championships. She suffered muscle spasms, nausea, and insomnia following the accident. She never wanted to use cannabis because of it being illegal at the time with the USADA and WADA. But, after incessant urging from her husband, she gave it a shot. She said, “Due to the stigma surrounding cannabis, I was hesitant to try it. It didn’t occur to me that cannabis had a medical purpose.” She continued on, “It was life-changing. But figuring out what dosages to take and when to take it was difficult. There wasn’t much information out there. I had to do a lot of experimenting.”
Interestingly, Joanna became interested in researching cannabis among adult athletes. What they found was that 61% of athletes used cannabis for pain, and 68% of those said cannabis helped improve their pain. “There were no differences in pain relief by age, but younger athletes reported better sleep and less anxiety with cannabis use than older athletes.”
Point is, the use of CBD, and cannabis, is increasing for athletes. Many use topical products for localized pain.
