Nearly 50% of all households in America have a dog, and almost 40% have a cat. Most pet owners would go to the ends of the earth to ensure their pets are happy, healthy, and well taken care of. It’s been estimated that American’s spend around $58 billion on veterinary expenses for dogs every year.
A study from 2016 by the Journal of American Holistic Veterinary Medical Association (JAHVMA) shows that hemp products may be beneficial for reducing the pain that our pets have. It also stated that over 64% of dog owners and 66% of cat owners felt the consumption of hemp products either moderately or greatly helped their pets.
Six-hundred and thirty-two people responded to a survey conducted by the Department of Clinical Sciences at the Colorado State University College of Veterinary Medicine. Of those that responded, 457 were either using, or have used a hemp product for their dog, and 104 for their cat. While the anecdotal evidence from these reports supports the hypothesis that cannabis products helped with pain in cats and dogs, over 50% of dogs and 44% of cats were perceived to have either moderately or greatly improved sleep habits after consuming hemp products.
Over 49% of dog owners reported that hemp products improved anxiety levels either moderately or greatly. Almost 57% of cat owners perceived the products were similarly helpful for reducing inflammation.
The most common side effects for cat and dog owners were sedation and overactive appetite – but no more than 22% of either group noticed a difference. Interestingly, 61.7% of respondents reported that their veterinarian responded positively to their usage of hemp products on their pets, and less than 8% reported a negative response.
From this study, it appears that CBD may help our pets just as much as other studies show it helps people. From pain, anxiety, inflammation, sleep patterns, and more, pet owners noticed a significant difference in their pets when taking hemp products.
Another study by the National Institute of Health reiterates that CBD is non-psychoactive (won’t get you “high”), and is shown to have a high protective index comparable to that of phenobarbital and phenytoin. A protective index compares the therapeutic effect to the amount that causes toxicity. So, this means that very large amounts of CBD can be consumed before any toxic effects will be noticed.
