There have been several MMA and UFC fighters speaking out about the benefits of CBD in the past year. Bas Rutten uses it to avoid opioid addiction, Cain Velasquez uses it to curb the pain of fights, and Nate Diaz uses it to help recovery efforts. While they have admitted to using CBD, and it is benefitting them, it was still listed as prohibited.
Starting in 2018, CBD will be removed from the prohibited list. Previously, CBD was banned during “in-competition”. “Cannabidiol is no longer prohibited,” World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) wrote in an official statement on its website. “Synthetic cannabidiol is not a cannabimimetic; however, cannabidiol extracted from cannabis plants may also contain varying concentrations of THC, which remains a prohibited substance.”
This article explains more about the process, but it highlights an encounter with Nate Diaz. Last year, Diaz had to face the press after losing his rematch to Conor McGregor. He was seen using a vape pen. "It's CBD," Diaz said at that time. “It helps with the healing process and inflammation, stuff like that. So you want to get these for before and after the fights, training. It'll make your life a better place.”
In March of ’17, another article was released regarding Chris Camozzi. He was in a training accident five weeks before a fight. “I was sparring preparing for Australia – guy went for a takedown and hooked my leg weird,” Camozzi said. “I twisted out a bit, thankfully. Probably would have torn my ACL too.” He had torn his MCL and used CBD oil as treatment. “One of the physicians he saw regularly works with the various Denver pro athletes; he said he’s never seen a MCL heal as well and as fast as Camozzi’s.”
“After my knee injury I continued to take CBD,” Camozzi said. “My shoulder ende up getting better too.”
Finally, these athletes can enjoy medicine freedom by using their preferred method of treatment – CBD. Although many of them used it before, regardless of the laws, they can now use it without the “heavy hand” coming down on them.
